YOUR KIND OF WATER / Paddling

A good launch is only half the paddle.

Compare the wind at launch with the wind on the way back. Choose sheltered or exposed water deliberately.

Compare your hours ↗

01

Start with the launch

Confirm whether a site allows hand launching, its current access and parking, and where you can exit. A boat ramp and a kayak launch are not interchangeable.

02

Check the return wind

A manageable outward paddle can become a different return trip. Compare gusts and direction across both hours, not only the first reading.

03

Know what the model represents

Open-ocean waves may not apply to a lake or sheltered bay. Missing wave data is not a flat-water report.

What this cannot tell you

The forecast does not measure every channel current, local boat wake or the conditions at your exact launch.
